Snapshots of Joy — Giving Back with Playtime Project

This past weekend, I had the absolute pleasure of volunteering with Playtime Project, a Washington, DC-based nonprofit that creates safe, fun, and trauma-informed play spaces for children experiencing housing insecurity. In honor of Mother’s Day, I partnered with the Playtime crew to offer complimentary family photo sessions—and let me just say, my heart is full.

There’s something truly beautiful about capturing families as they are—joyful, chaotic, giggly, real. These weren’t your average studio-perfect portraits, but raw and honest moments of love and connection. The kids showed up in their full of life, moms beamed with pride, and for a few frames at a time, nothing else mattered except being together.
It reminded me of my earliest tech days, back when I was rockin’ the Geek Squad badge. I used to volunteer with community programs like the Boys and Girls Club of Greater Washington, leading storyboarding and film production classes for the kiddos. Watching them bring their creative visions to life—and then proudly share their finished films—was everything. I’d forgotten how good it feels to serve, to give, and to pour into others without expectation.
This recent collaboration with Playtime Project reignited that spark. It was a perfect blend of my creative lens and my tech/project management brain doing what they do best: storytelling and making things happen.
Here’s to more opportunities to show up, give back, and put both sides of the brain to good use.
With a full heart (and full memory cards),
-Summer
